The case

This one is a numbers read. On our Elo team-strength rating, Las Vegas is 1466, twenty-first. New Orleans is 1491, eighteenth. So the rating itself still has New Orleans slightly ahead.

But Vegas started the season rated very low and has climbed fast, so that gap is closing fast. Through two games, Las Vegas is plus 26 on points. New Orleans is plus 6. The scoring margin already favours the climber even while Elo still lists New Orleans a step higher.

New Orleans is also without offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr., who is on injured reserve, and its defence has been one of the softest in the league against the run. That combination — a climbing visitor, a soft run defence, and a missing offensive lineman on the home side — is why Vegas lands on the Watch List as the side we lean.

What would change our mind

The Elo climb stalling while New Orleans' points differential catches up, or a New Orleans run defence that stops looking soft. Either would undercut the numbers case. Bowers' status alone doesn't change the lean.
